Introduction - My name is Richard Bierman. As an acupuncturist and complementary health practitioner I have spent numerous hours talking with others and reading up on the subject to come up with alternatives to the use of antibiotics. Unfortunately there are only a few heroic practitioners out there who are willing to take the time to study this complex problem.
The following is a compilation of my research and treatment of lyme. by Rick Berman Short Etilogy and Mechanisms of Action Lyme disease (LD) is a multi faceted recurrent illness caused by the tick borne spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) and its co infections, Babesia, Bartonella henselae, Mycoplasma, and Ehrlichia. The genus Borrelia has at least 20 different pathogenic species. There are reported at least 300 subtypes of Borrelia. Their are many other non pathogenic Borrelia species known to occupy the mouth. Babesia has at least 3 known variants including WA-1 and others. There is observed initially by Dr. Burgdorferi, a reported micro nematode (threadworm) that is considered by many practitioners a co infection. Along with this host of pathogens opportunistic infections can occur such as Herpes 1 and 2, HHV6, Leishmonisis, Brucella and Cosackie virus, Candida albicans and other systemic fungal infections. Aggravation of other chronic illness can occur from the treatment of LD. This includes aggravation of latent Herpes simplex 1 and 2, and Herpes Zoster as well as other viruses EBV, CMV and HHV6. Elevated heavy metals such as mercury, lead, nickel, and cadmium, vaccine poisons, root canals and cavitations can aggravate the illness, cause relapses, slow down and even prevent full recovery. Individuals with certain genotypes lack or have diminished ability to develop antibodies to attach to circulating toxins produced by the Borrelia decreasing the ability to the individual to move these toxins out of the body. Also some individuals have impaired detoxification pathways due to heredity, vaccination poisons, heavy metal toxicity or toxic exposure to pesticides or petroleum based compounds. Borrelia species has been found in test of individuals with other diseases including Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alateral sclerosis and chronic fatigue syndrome. Individuals can be infected with more than one type of Borrelia and some practioners feel the type and severity of the symptoms can be related to the type and virulence of the organism. Bb has can live in the blood and tissues, and in the white and red blood cells. It has a least 4 forms, granular, spirochete, cell wall deficient, and cyst phase. The cyst phase can lay dormant for at least 11 months and maybe longer. It also develops blebs, which detach from the spirochete. The blebs are composed of chromosomal material. It is a gram negative anaerobic organism. There is also reported in the early literature of a concomitant virus found in the deer along with Bb. The Bb loves fatty tissues and can bore through tissue. Babesia can live inside the red blood cells. There is suggested evidence to link this organism and some of its co factors with genetic engineering and biological weapons research. (Plum Island Weapons Lab off the north shore of Long Island, NY, just 30 miles as the crow flies to Lime Connecticut. Some individuals have begone to differentiate lyme into old lyme and new lyme. Borrelia infections have been around for many years before the presence of Plum Island weapons laboratory. Lyme if treated early can be resolved and a person can be cured. If left untreated it maybe become progressively worse. Supposedly one report is that 70% of the patients can be treated effectively with allopathic protocols. Along with this are secondary effects due to the gram negative nature of Bb bacteria. Gram negative bacteria have a lipopolysaccharide cell wall "LPS". The LPS are neurotoxins which have a low molecular weight which affect the whole body through the following mechanisms: Excerpts from The Detoxx Book Disrupts sodium and calcium channel receptors Attacks enzyme reactions involving glucose processing at the cellular level Manufactures renegade fatty acids impairing membrane function. Stimulates phospholipase A2 (PLA2) which prematurely uncouples essential fatty acids from cell membranes Impairs the function of PPAR gamma which affects changes in DNA function and gene switching. As the neurotoxin migrates into the nucleus it turns on the gene group at the cytokine nuclear receptor, the neurotoxin begins to replicate itself and thus TNF alpha, IL-beta and IL6 are released. As fat soluble neurotoxins move through the cells they get into the hepatic system and thus the body is poisoned continually. (The liver and gallbladder are significantly impaired and thus the detoxification and eliminations processes are adversely affected. Slowly over time the neurotoxin levels rise increasing the presence of TNF alpha, IL-beta and IL6 and the body are slowly poisoned from the inside. TNF alpha suppress myelin formation the fatty insulation layer of the nerve cells, competes with insulin at the cellular receptor sites, and causes hyper coagulation of blood and thus restriction of blood flow. There is clinical evidence to indicate that other types of exposure to toxins such as mycotoxins, algae toxins and other chemical toxins also affect the immune system in the way as Bb endotoxins. Transmission of the bacteria Most of the literature says that the disease is transmitted thru the deer tick. Some experienced MDs are saying that it also transmitted sexually and research indicates through breast milk. It has also been found in tears. Some reports indicate that it is being found on other vectors such a field mice, dogs, cats and insects such as fleas and mosquitoes. One report has found it in sheep in Europe. Two highly respected researches independently using different diagnostic models have found very high numbers of infected individuals throughout the general population. This is suggestive that the organism is transmitted in other ways than through insect and animal vectors. One thing I have found it that whole families seem to have it. The conventional literature says that one has to have the tick biting your body for 24 hours. In the field wisdom indicates that it is possible to have the organism transferred in a few hours. Testing for the illness http://www.Igenex.com/ Igenex.com and Immunosciences labs are very reliable labs for antibody testing for the presence of the organisms. Unfortunately you can have a lot of false negatives and may not be completely conclusive. Waiting for the results can allow the organism to take root. Many practitioners find that Lyme is a clinical diagnosis and negatives from laboratory testing should not rule out the presence of this disease. The spirochetes can be seen sometimes under dark field microscopy. Reports are that it may take up to four hours before you see the spirochetes. Also if the blood is incubated for 3 days the spirochetes come out of the cells. Functional Acuity Contrast Test (FACT) is a simple vision test of the ability of the eye to distinguish gray scale. A failure of this 5 minute test can indicate the presence of neurotoxins in the body. This test has also been reported to be a marker for determining the effectiveness of the tx protocol. The presence of symptoms is always a good way of determining if one is sick with this illness. A mild fever and flu like symptoms can present a few days later. In some cases no initial presentation occurs and the person does not know until many months later if he or she is infected. It is very common to have an individual find out years later that they have lyme dxs. This may happen after spending time & money going to see numerous doctors and health practitioners and being diagnosed with all sorts of maladies. Random mild to severe pains in the large joints This is an illness of a thousand manifestations. Individuals can goes through a revolving door of symptoms as the neurotoxins move through different systems and well as suffer from the symptoms of the co infections and opportunistic organisms. Sometimes one works to a stalemate with the illness and is able to function normally with minor and no symptoms although relapses can occur. Some people report successfully battling the organisms to the end and are free of the disease. Treatment approaches have to include a way to kill t he organisms including in the brain, eliminating the circulating neurotoxins and other toxins supporting the body in the process and boosting the immune system while down regulating its inflammatory response. As reported by some patients a person must be symptom free for at least 2 months before considering stopping them. Multiple antibiotics need to be used as the organism adjusts to one. Treatment with probiotics and antifungals have to take place in order to lower fungal overgrowth and bacterial overgrowth in the bowel. Tinnidazol is being used instead of Flagyl for the cyst phase and as first line by some doctors for chronic cases. Some people have reported very good results using enteric coated flagyl and doxicycline. Homeopathy/ Isopathy: It has been reported by reputable homeopaths that if you treat the initial exposure up to 4 to 6 months with Hypericum 200c 1 dose, Ledum 200c one dose and Bb nosode 30c for 10 days one will not have a progression of the disease. This was reported to have occurred in 300 patients. It also has been reported by a reputable and highly accomplished homeopath that the use of constitutional homeopathy can effectively cure the disease. This has occurred in around 40 of her patients. The use of Sanum remedies Recarsin, Notokheel, Utilin S, Citrokheel have been reported to be helpful. Please note that these should only be proscribed by a health practitioner experienced with these remedies as they are very strong acting. Chinese Medicine A number of formulas exist which have been reported to be successfully used. These include the formula approach by Dr. Zhang, Dr. B Wiessbach and Dr. Ba Houng.
